Getting a Wether Goat
In the last few years goats have soared in popularity as pets. They're smart, charming and have personality for days - what's not to love? If you're thinking of getting a goat as a pet, a wether goat is a great fit.
Why a Wether Goat?
Wether's are male goats that are castrated. This is usually because there are usually more bucklings born to breeders than should be kept intact to become herd sires. Most responsible breeders will only keep a handful of exceptional bucklings intact to go on to be breeding bucks. The ones that don't make the cut are fixed.
A wether goat makes the perfect pet. They don't smell like bucks, or have rut behavior that makes it a challenge to keep bucks. They also tend to have great personalities and can be purchased at a much lower price than does.
Wether Power
In addition to making great pets, wethered goats can still be incredibly useful. There are several great environmentally friendly companies who are now employing wethers to do brush removal, for businesses and residential areas. Wethers also make great cart goats - they're easily trained and are very rugged. Wethers are also seeing work as pack goats, carrying goods for serious hikers.
If wethers aren't gainfully employed as pets or other tasks, they will most likely be eaten. As long as those wethers are humanly raised and well treated, this is a very useful role for them as well.
Caring For Your Wether
Not only are wether goats cheaper to purchase, but they are also very cheap and easy to maintain. They require the same basic supplies you would require for bringing any new goats home, as well as a leak proof, draft proof shelter where they can stay warm and dry at night and during inclement weather.
Wethers only require quality hay and fresh water to remain in good health. Some folks do choose to give their wethers grain during the winter months if they live in a cold area to help maintain their weight. If you do choose to feed your wethers grain, it's very important to make sure it's well balanced to prevent Urinary Calculi.
Get Your Goat
Providing a good home for a wether is a rewarding experience for both you and the wether. They make fantastic, trainable companions and can be both useful and fun. If you're considering getting a goat as a pet or for non-dairy work, wethers are the perfect fit.
